The Pros and Cons of Buffalo, NY

We all know the cons of Buffalo: economic depression, cold weather, poverty… let’s talk about something new already, like Buffalo’s blossoming art scene. Check out the Allentown Art Festival if you aren’t convinced. Or the Elmwood Avenue fest. Or the echo Art Fair. Or…

Pros and Cons of Albequerque, NM

Albequerque is one of the quirkiest cities in the country. Its vibe is like few others: a sunset-backed, turquoise-studded, outdoorsy approach to life that is highly amenable to hiking, biking and frolicking amongst the New Mexico olive trees. However, what Albuquerque has in outdoors activities it largely lacks in city attractions. Suffice it to say, don’t expect your favorite bands to be passing through regularly… or ever.

But that’s okay if you know what to

do. The best thing to do in Albuquerque is to catch the Festival of Balloons each October. Even better? Ride in it.

The Pros and Cons of Moving to St. Louis

So, you’re moving to St. Louis,

huh?  That’s good!  St. Louis is a great place to raise a family due to its low rents and quality amenities.  Just avoid living in the city itself, if you want to raise that family.  Crime is a problem there.

Pros and Cons of Richmond, VA

Richmond has the coolest nickname in the states, no doubt. I mean, Fist City? Dang, that’s fierce. And the city deserves it. I mean, sure, it’s fairly small and filled with lawyers, but the place knows how to support a hardcore arts scene like few others.

Pros and Cons of Hartford, CT

Chances are that whatever insurance you have, it comes from Hartford. Hartford is the international home of the insurance industry, and with that comes plenty of wealth – the city wheels and deals hardcore money. However, oddly, little of that trickles down to the Hartford city proper, which is one of the most impoverished large cities in the nation.

Pros and Cons of Moving to Oakland, CA

Well known as San Francisco’s dingy little brother, Oakland, CA, is turning some of its negative qualities into positives.  For example, rents in Oakland are a fraction of the price of those across the bay, and its graffitioid culture has become an artform all its own. That being said, Oakland still suffers from high-crime neighborhoods.

But high crime simply cannot hurt Oakland’s current momentum. The best thing to do in Oakland is watch the sun fall behind the bay from Beer Revolution’s sunny patio, then head into the heart of the city, preferably on a First Friday Art Murmur night, so you can gawk at the local art.

Pros and Cons of Dallas, TX

Big D has some big-time positives, especially if you enjoy Texan activities, like eating brisket and wearing cowboy boots. Of course, it’s also landlocked, hot and in the middle of tornado alley.

What’s some well-cooked beef without a little risk, though, amirite?

Pros and Cons of San Francisco, CA

Big city, bright lights, cool, cool fog. San Francisco is a pretty amazing place to be. Sure, the fog rolls in at 5:00 pm and leaves you wondering whether you somehow teleported to Sweden, and sure rents are outrageously high, but the city is hands down one of the most beautiful in the world, and it has so many restaurants/museums/bars/parks/shops/sights/hikes/clubs/events that you can really never get bored. For many San Franciscans, all the things to do justify rents that routinely top $2,000/mo.

The best thing to do in San Francisco is to sip away a Saturday afternoon with a bottle of wine and a friend or two at Dolores Park, then head into Hayes Valley for some fine dining and window shopping.

Pros and Cons of Jacksonville, FL

Jacksonville is one of those fast-developing American cities that has decided growth is more important than culture. I mean, it makes sense that people want to live there; the city is located on miles of pristine beach and has plenty of jobs, but the current sprawl is more massive than any other U.S. city, and no end appears in sight.

Pros and Cons of Houston, TX

Do you want to live in a culturally diverse city? Then think Houston, the epicenter for world energy industries, which attracts businesses from all over the world, China to Saudi Arabia to Mexico.

But do you want to live in a place that is hotter than a furnace and has air stickier than gum?
