What Happens When Movers Break Stuff?

Moving companies are fallible, just like the rest of us. They are fully capable of breaking something valuable by stepping on it, dropping it, or smacking it on the corner of a wall.

But then what happens?

When movers break stuff, three things might happen:

  1. It goes unpaid
  2. The movers pay for it
  3. An insurance company pays for it

What happens in each particular case depends on the moving contract and policies in place. If a customer feels slighted, they can always try to sue in small claims court.

What If I Don't Agree with My Moving Bill?

If you think your movers overcharged you, you have a few options:

  1. Talk to your movers about it. This is the ideal way to resolve the dispute.
  2. Don’t pay, and prepare for your movers to sue you or to try to collect.
  3. File for arbitration with the American Moving and Storage Association, if your movers are members.
  4. Sue your movers in court, if you’ve already paid.

Who Is the American Moving and Storage Association?

Perhaps you saw them named in your moving contract, or maybe you came upon them through an Internet search. The American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) is a centralized entity located in Virginia that oversees the relocation industry.

Many movers are members of the AMSA, especially interstate movers. If your mover is, you can at least trust that they aren’t a scam. Additionally, if things do get a bit scammy, then you can address the problem through the AMSA’s arbitration programs

8 Reasons Why You Should Tie Mattress to Car

Moving a mattress on your car’s roof seems like a ghetto-tastic, dangerous, irresponsible thing to do. However, tying your mattress to the roof of your car isn’t crazy. For those moving alone, it’s a great option for a number of reasons:

  1. You’ll have something to sleep on when you arrive in your new home.
  2. It’s as cheap as buying some $2.99 rope.
  3. It’s actually not that hard.
  4. You’ll give fellow motorists a laugh.
  5. It’ll air out the bed bugs.
  6. You can do it alone.
  7. It’ll save you from having to buy a new, $500 mattress.
  8. It doesn’t take up tunk space.

Learn about the how to tie a mattress to a car roof.

Moving in Bad Weather

If you have to move in sleet, you’ll certainly wish you were moving in the heat, but when the temperature is topping 100 and you’re sweating through your socks, you’ll wish it was raining buckets, because anything would be better than that sticky humidity dripping off your nose, even snow, which at least doesn’t make you sopping wet, though, admittedly, it does numb your toes.

Point is, bad weather is bad weather, and they’re all bad for moving. But there are ways to make your move a little sunnier, metaphorically speaking, of course.

Learn how to move in bad weather and when to give up and hire some movers.

Top 3 Ways to Leave a Job

The man in the cubicle next to you has been wheezing with flem since November; your boss is far more aggressive than passive; and while you sit in traffic on the way to work, you dwell on how little you get paid.

Time for a new job, yeah?

Here are three class ways to leave a job:

  1. Mess with your colleague’s computers by setting an alarm for the day after your last day. Have it display a memoric message, such as “remember when Rick set off the fire alarm? That was prime.”
  2. Hire someone to come into the office dressed provocatively and ask for you by just your middle name. Walk out with him/her, arm in arm, talking loudly of dinner together at fancy restaurants and moving somewhere exotically placed.
  3. Wait until your screensaver goes black. Then wait until everybody in the office leaves. Say goodbye to each of them, even if you don’t know their names. Put your feet on your desk. Wait until the janitor empties the trash. After you say goodbye to him, make your way to the lights, those sickly fluorescent lights, and make them go away. Back at your desk, once your eyes have adjusted, get contemplative. Sit there, in the dark, yes, thinking about all the time you spent in that chair, working your work and being employed. My how time passes, you know? All those past lunch hours. All those five-minutes-to-five’s. Gosh, can you still remember your first day?

How to Move a Piano without Movers… or not

I was just walking down the street when I saw two men struggling to move a piano. It wasn’t the biggest piano. In fact, it looked decrepit and quite cheap. However, it was a piano nonetheless, and these two men were attempting to move it…

On a skateboard.

Where to Get Information About a Rental Home

You don’t want to rent a restored meth house, do you? What about a home that housed a ghastly murder? Or a home next to a perpetual party?

The rental price and the way a home looks are great, but you should do some background research into the stuff you can’t see before signing a lease.

Here’s where to get information about a house:

  • County recorder – The county recorder’s office will have documents regarding who owns the home and any liens on it.
  • Newspaper/online media – News stories often name the address of an involved home.
  • Local court public records – See if you home or your potential neighbors’ homes have been involve in any lawsuits. Some courts have search functions on their premises.  Others, not so much — you might have to use names.
  • Police – If the home was the location of a crime, there should be a police report regarding it.
