How to Change an Address with the DMV

Change address with DMV.

The DMV is a horrible place filled with wasted time and unsavory individuals. It’s best avoided. And, fortunately, you can change your address with the DMV online. For fellow Californians, go to the DMV’s Online Services Page and choose “change of address”.

For those from other states, go to your state’s transportation office website (DMV, Department of Transportation, Secretary of State…), and do the same.

Military Relocation Tips

Military relocation is not easy.  Whether the military is moving you or not, there are a lot of documents and procedures you need to follow. Screwing them up can lead to wasted time and money.

Read our Military Move Checklist for what to do.

Here are our three tips to always keep in mind:

  1. Communicate with the Military whether through your TMO or the move.mil website. If you keep in contact and ask questions, you’ll be fine.
  2. Move What You Can – Even if you need the military to plan most of your move, just packing up your car with stuff can lead to cash in your pocket. See Partial DITY moves.
  3. Take Advantage of Your Status – Moving companies and hotels offer deals for service members, because they know you all move a lot, and they want your business. Shop around a bit for services, and see what deals they have.

Moving Horror Story #1 – Why You Need to Change Your Address

Ever hear about the phantom parking ticket?

The government needs to give you notice of parking ticket. They do this by sticking the parking ticket under your windshield wipers, usually. It’s not a perfect system. The ticket can blow away, you can drive off with it, a man can throw it on the ground with anti-government vehemence… It is possible to get a parking ticket without knowing.

All subsequent notices, such as court dates, late fees and deadlines, are sent to by mail to the address you have registered with the DMV or your local Department of Transportation. So, if you never change your address with the DMV, you might never get notice of a parking ticket at all.

When you finally get wind of the ticket, it might have spiked from $50 to a frightening $350 or more.  And there’s nothing you can do. If you can try to tell the judge that you moved, he’ll just say:

“You should’ve changed your address.”

Scary.

Military Move Tips

Our number one military move tip is don’t let the military do it for you.

Why, you ask? Because unless you have a large family or an injury, you, spry and healthy military member, should be able to pack and load your stuff on your own. And if you do, the military will pay you for it.

It’s called a DITY move or PPM.

Check out our military move checklist for more military move tips and guidance.

MLK

No matter where you’re moving, there’s almost sure to be a street, square, building or park adorned with his name or initials.

Martin Luther King, Jr.’s efforts nearly forty years ago meant much to countless communities, from Montgomery to small-town Montana. And they still affect us today. Here at MovingGuru.com, we remember and thank Dr. King for helping make it acceptable for all of us, no matter what our skin color is or where we were born, to move where we wish and live there with our neighbors in peace and mutual respect.

Happy MLK Day all.

Tips for DITY Move

DITY moves, also known as personally-procured transportation moves (PPM), are great ways to use the government’s laziness to your advantage.

If you move yourself, the government will pay you 95% of what it would cost it to move you. So, if you can move for real cheap, you can actually earn money doing it.

But how can one make the most money possible on a DITY move? And, more importantly, not lose money?

  • Get the DITY rate first – Visit your TMO or related office to get your estimated DITY rate, called the government constructive cost. It’ll depend on the estimated weight of your stuff and the distance you’re moving.
  • Move on your own – If at all possible, move by yourself using what you have. At most, rent a moving truck.
  • Sell stuff – Get rid of your big stuff, which lowers the cost of moving significantly.
  • Friends/family – Use free help where you can.
  • Keep receipts – And present them to the military within 45 days of your move; otherwise you may lose your right to repayment.

Personally-Procured Move vs DITY Move

What’s the difference between a personally procured move (PPM) and DITY move?

Nothing. They’re different names for the same thing. You see, the military used to call their alternative move program, which allows you to move yourself and get paid 95% of the price it would have costed the military, DITY. DITY stand for do-it-yourself. Get it? Do-it-yourself move.

Anyhow, a few years back, someone decided that was too informal, too childish-sounding, too not-stuffy. So, they changed it to the more proper-sounding personally-procured transportation move, now known as PPM.

I personally like DITY. It’s more fun to say, because it’s like a word. DITY, like “ditty”.  PPM, though? There’s no way around pronouncing the letters.

Can I Predict the Government Constructive Cost?

Wouldn’t you like to?

So would I. Unfortunately, neither of us are likely to.

I can tell you what the government constructive cost is. It’s the price that the government (military) determines it would cost them to move you (service member). However, when it comes to the actual calculations used to reach that price, the GCC is a mystery.

What Do Moving Cleaning Services Do?

If you’re moving out, you might need to hire a moving cleaning service. They’re professional, get-the-stains-out people who can clean better than you, so maybe you will get your rental deposit back.

For roughly $200, most moving cleaning services will do the following:

  • Dust everything
  • Sweep & mop
  • Scrub everything
  • Wipe down counters
  • Clean cabinets and under furniture

If you need more help, like carpet cleaning, it might cost you more.
