Moving Scams: The Stolen Deposit

There are dozens of moving scams out there, and over the course of the next few weeks, we here at MovingGuru.com will try to fill you in on the gist of all of them.

A moving scam is when a person uses, abuses or takes the property of someone during the moving process.  Usually the perpetrator is in a position of power.  For example, they pretend to be a landlord, or a realtor, or a moving company.  Then, when they have the mover’s trust, they rip them off and disappear.

The Stolen Deposit

One of the most common moving scams is the stolen deposit.  In this case, the scammer pretends to be a landlord and asks for a deposit to hold an open apartment for the mover.  Then, after the mover gives the scammer cash or a check, the scammer disappears, and the mover learns that the scammer wasn’t really the landlord of the property.

How to Avoid It: The best way to avoid this scam is to meet the landlord at their office or in the apartment itself.  Also, make sure you get their contact information and a reference to a current tenant.

Cheapest Times to Move

Moving costs vary widely, depending on when you move.  If you want to make the cheapest move possible, not only do you have to find the right moving company and cut down on your moving expenses, you need to .

There are four major time considerations when moving:

  1. Time of Year – The summer months tend to be more expensive than the winter ones, because most people move in the summer.
  2. Time of Month – The majority of leases start on the first of the month, making the last week and first week of the month more demanded, and thus more pricey.
  3. Time of Week – Weekends tend to be a bit more expensive.  Also, gas prices are cheapest in the middle of the week.
  4. Time of Day – You can save some money by moving in off hours, like early morning or evening.  However, rush hour traffic can put a damper on any move and lead to higher hourly rates.  Consider how you’re being charged when determining the time of day to move.

What Is a Living Will?

Do you what will happen to you if you end up in a coma?

Well, medical personnel will make a number of life-saving decision to start things.  Then they’ll confer with your family regarding future treatment.

But what if you and your family don’t agree with what treatment?  Will you be able to voice your opinion? No, unless you have a living will.

Living wills are documents that give you the power to control the medical services you receive.  If you end up injured and unable to communicate, medical personnel will base their treatment on what you asked for in your living will, not on family members or the law.

Because anyone, young or old, large or small, can end up in a traumatic health situation, everyone should have a living will.  And even if you have a living will, if you’re moving, then you will need to update your living will.

Military Basic Housing Allowance

The military offers its service members a basic housing allowance, which can be used to pay for off-base housing.  The basic housing allowance (BAH) can greatly help members to find housing for themselves and their families, and it’s non-taxable.  But how much is it?

The housing allowance rate differs for every person.  There are a number of factors that go into a member’s BAH:

  • Location – How much average housing is in the area affects the BAH.  Check here for basic rates.
  • Dependants – Not how many, but simply whether a member has dependants.
  • Pay/salary – The higher the member’s earnings, the higher the BAH.

The BAH is not affected by how much your rent actually is.  So, you still need to take care in finding off-base housing that will fit your budget.

How to Find Off-Base Housing (Military)

Many people in the military have families, pets, or simply want some space.  They would prefer to live off base and commute, rather than live in on-base housing.

For these service members, being transferred to a new base can be very disrupting.  Finding new housing is never easy.  Finding it on a strict time table, as often required in military transfers, is even worse.  However, it’s not impossible.

Fortunately, there are many resources out there for service members looking for off-base housing.

  • Veteran’s Association – The nation-wide VA has a lot of personnel and resources available to help both current and past service members find housing.
  • Relocation Office – The base will probably have personnel that know all about the local  housing landscape.
  • Rental Partnership Program – This is a military organization that specializes in helping military members find rental housing for affordable prices.
  • Military Housing Agencies – There are many businesses that specialize in locating properties and rentals near military bases.

How to Move a Keg on Your Own

A full beer keg weighs roughly 160 pounds, and it’s a large, smooth cylinder.  Moving one is quite difficult, especially so if you are alone.  However, like anything, moving a keg solo can be done.  Here’s how:

  1. Get help at the liquor store – When you buy the keg, have the store’s staff bring the keg out to your vehicle.  They’ll help you load it, too.
  2. Secure the keg – Use a seatbelt or a bungee cord to secure the keg in place, so it doesn’t roll around and get foamy during the drive.
  3. Use a dollyDollies are great for moving heavy objects.  If you have one on hand, use it.  Carefully slide the keg out of the vehicle and onto the dolly.  Use some cushioning under the keg, like a few towels, so that impact doesn’t severely shake its contents.
  4. Get help – If you don’t have a dolly or the likes, want until one of your party patrons shows up, and ask for some help.  Trying to carry a keg alone is next to impossible, and you can hurt your back if you try.

*What not to do: Drag the keg out of your car, have it thud heavily on the pavement, roll it inside.  Why?  Because you will disturb the beer.  If you try to tap the keg after that, it will pour mostly foam for a few hours.

Finding Moving Help on Craigslist

Online classifieds are a great way to find moving help.  You can use websites, like Craigslist and TaskRabbit, to find full-service moving companies to help you with your move.  Moreover, you can post your own ad, listing your own price, and see if any companies bite.

Online classified are even more useful for DIY moves, however.  For many people, the only thing preventing them from making a DIY move is their large armoire, or their king-size bed, or their leather couch — big things that they can’t carry on their own.  For those people, online classifieds are a great way to find the extra hand they need.  Handymen frequent the site, looking for small tasks, like helping someone move a couch.  You can pay them by the hour or by task and save yourself a ton of money when compared to hiring a moving company.

The Benefits of DITY Moves

If you need to move while serving in the military, you have two basic options: (1) do it yourself (DITY) or (2) let the military do it for you.  Though turning over the reigns to the government might be the easiest option, there are a few major benefits to doing it yourself, which should be considered:

  1. Money, money, money – If you do it yourself, the military will pay you 95% of the price it would have paid to move you.  So, if you are able to move at 75% of the military’s cost, the remaining 20% goes into your pocket.  Fortunately, many moving services offer discounted rates for military members, making this a realistic possibility.
  2. Time – If you do it yourself, the military will give you some extra time to make your move.  Plus, you don’t have to move when the military decides to move your stuff.
  3. Care – Would you hire a moving company you don’t trust?  If you let the government move your stuff, that very well might happen.  You control your move if you do it yourself.  You get to decide how to protect your stuff and who to hire.  There’s a lot to be said for that.

Talking About Nursing Homes

Bringing up moving to someone is never easy.  For example, breaking a move to your kids should be dealt with carefully and considerately.  However, no moving conversation is more delicate than telling a loved one it’s time to move them into an assisted care facility.

For many people, there comes a time when a nursing home is the best option.  It’s safer and more affordable than living at home alone.  However, no one wants to move into a nursing home, and telling a loved one to do it requires some conversational skill.

There are two things to keep in mind when talking about nursing homes:

  • Safety – Always make your loved one’s well being top priority
  • Positivity – It’ll be a change, but stress the positives, like meeting new people.

Staying positive and stressing their safety should help you along.  For more tips, check out our article on the subject.

Getting a Date Before You Move

Okay, you want to make moving seamless?  I mean, you want to pick up in your new hometown like you’ve been there for years?  Well, if you’re single, the best way to do that is to get a date before you even move there.

Dating websites are a great way to meet new people, and you don’t have to wait until you move to take advantage of them.  All dating sites will require you to put in your hometown, so just include your soon-to-be rather than the soon-not-to-be.

Of course, it’s not like you’ll find a date online snap-snap automatic, but it’s certainly possible to meet Mr. “Right”, or Ms. “Wrong”, or Mr. “Just Fill Up My Saturday Night So I Don’t Eat a Whole Pizza While Alone in My New Home”.  Give it a shot.
