When Moving Day Arrives...

You’re packed, the movers are here and you’re ready to go. With all your preparations coming down to this one day, it’s easy to forget the little things that will keep everyone happy and healthy during the move. You want everyone to arrive at the new location in one piece right? And you want to remember everything, all the finite details. Here are some of the oft-forgotten chores, along with some things you can do to keep the whole thing moving smoothly.

Happy Helpers

  • Keep the Kids Busy: Remember that moving is stressful for the whole family, including your kids. You can keep them out of the way by sending them to grandma’s house, or you can create projects for them to make moving fun. Enlist them to pack up their own clothes, wad up newspaper or set up boxes (just let them play in the boxes for a few minutes before you take them away).

  • Safeguard your Pets: Cats and dogs can get especially freaked out on moving day. If at all possible, confine them to an unused room with lots of water and toys to play with. Or keep them outside, away from the movers. You don’t want any altercations between the movers and your riled-up pets.

  • Take Care of your Movers: It is a great idea to keep your movers happy. Consider it bribery if you like, but there is nothing wrong with offering coffee, bottled water and cold drinks throughout the day. Likewise, if your movers are your friends, be prepared to offer them food for lunch and dinner, and snacks throughout the day.

  • Keep your Neighbors Happy: Be sure the moving truck doesn’t block anyone’s driveway, that your movers are courteous and no louder than they need to be, and that they stay on your property. Never leave any trash or furniture outside when you leave, and try to move during reasonable hours (not too early and not too late).

Don’t Forget!

  • Clean out the Fridge: An often-overlooked chore, the fridge is full of stuff that’s got to go. If you’re moving a short distance, you may consider taking condiments with you; it can be expensive to replace them all. Otherwise, get out the trash bags and start cleaning.

  • Final Check: Once the moving truck is full, be sure to go back into your house to check for any left items or damage that should be repaired. Your house should be left in equal or better shape than when you moved in.

  • Get Directions: If you’re driving, make sure you have directions printed out or maps in the car. Plan to stop often for restroom breaks, rests and food, and remember to drink lots of water.
